The Jodo Mission in Historic Lahaina Town
This beautiful and serene Jodo Mission Cultural Park is located in the historic whaling town of Lahaina. The Jodo Mission sites on the sacred site The Hawaiians call Puunoa Point, which means "the hill freed from taboo". Once a small village called Mala (garden), the Jodo Mission is home to the largest Buddha outside of Japan commemorating the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in 1868. The property owned by the Lahaina Jodo Mission includes and authentic Buddhist Temple and 90-foot tall Pagoda with all the symbolic surroundings that are typical of the great Buddhist temples in Japan.
